Laser Cutting: Part Two (Testing and Sketches)

Image
Process For First Sketches and Transfer to Rhino Testing      First, I needed to make the tile into the proper format for the laser cutter to read. I decided to just do the main tile and I took out some of the elements to simplify it for this test. Colour coding and hatching. Adding a material reference for proper scale.       The file, for the laser cutter to be able to properly read the file, had to be changed. All etching is in grayscale and the red for the cut marks has to be red 250. And the laser cutter can only read Rhino 7 files. Final Test Cut Project Progress      First, I decided on what I wanted to do - at first I wanted to do some other crests from my own art. But I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to assemble the project. Then I was struck by an even better idea, with an idea on how to assemble it.       It will be a small 3D picture of a bug amongst ferns and grass and the like. Some of the leaves will ex...

Laser Cutting: Part One (Inspo and Practicing Patterns)

Link to Research Presentation Patterns The Base Photos:      Pattern from one of my chairs. Has a fun scale-like pattern. With colour and inner shape repetition and patterning as well.      Rug pattern that has a plethora of fun shapes. Especially the diamond/star and square shapes that encompass the other smaller elements.       Just a random book I own that has this interesting pattern on the front. It's raised and made from a plastic that is meant to mimic metal.      Because of all the different nooks and crannies, I decided to choose this one. There are a variety of ways to approach tracing this to create a pattern.  Process Photos: Working Files First Traces Another shape to add interest and more changing of shading.  Some shading to figure out the colour palette.  Various arrangements of the base tile. Arranging the tiles together More shapes in the in-between spaces for more interest.    Mo...

Make That Shape

Progress and Challenges That I Encountered    Starting with aligning the circle with the end snap and where the four corners meet.   Using the fillet tool to round the corners instead of using other circles.      Various ways and curve tools to try and draw the connections between the circles.    First attempt with the split - the bottom section doesn't have caps on the ends. Didn't trim the middle part of the cutting line out.  Doubled up the cutting line, trimmed the middle section out, and used the double line so that both sections had the cap at the end.  The copy didn't quite fit, so I used the scale tools.  Using the rotate tool so that all of the circles are the same size and end up on each corner.  Used the individual anchor points to shape the star to the trace shape.  Using the split tool, after exploding both stars, to properly cut up each of the lines so that the fillet tool works on the inner corners.  On...
